Instructions To Parents of Children who are to receive Oral Sedation for Dental TreatmentDue to your child’s age, dental problems or inability to cooperate in the dental chair, it will be necessary to give your child an oral sedative (Midazolam, a short acting drug). This medication will be mixed with Panadol syrup to disguise its bitter taste. This mixture will sedate your child in approximately 20-30 minutes. Although not common, your child may fall asleep before, during and after the dental treatment, but should be awakened easily. This sedative effect will last approximately 2 to 3 hours in total. Please also note the following information:§ Your child is fit and healthy on the day of the appointment.§ You inform us of any medical condition that your child may suffer from, including respiratory
difficulties such as sleep apnea, night-time snoring, tonsillitis, etc.§ You inform the dentist if your child is taking any medications (e.g. erythromycin, EES)§ Your child is fasted for the procedure (nothing to eat for 6 hours prior to the appointment- especially milk products, and nothing to drink for 4 hours prior the appointment time). This means no breakfast!§ Be prepared to spend approximately two hours at the surgery on the day of sedation.§ Your child will require your full attention, so please do not bring other children.§ Please arrange for private transport after your appointment, as it may be difficult to manage your child on a bus or train. If you are the driver, a second responsible adult should look after your child in the back seat.§ Keep close supervision of your child after the procedure, as he/she may fall or trip easily. This also applies for the rest of the day of the sedation visit.§ A rare side effect of the medication is known as the “Angry Child Syndrome”. In the event that this occurs, the dental procedure may be abandoned.§ If you have any questions or require further advice please contact the surgery.
